UNC Finishes 14th In Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Tar Heels conclude the Landfall Tradition in 14th place with a 25-over 889. North Carolina's Bryana Nguyen recorded the leading score for the team with a 2-over 218.
Nguyen, a sophomore from Columbia, Md., carded two birdies and three bogeys in a successful final round for a 1-over 73. Nguyen finished 16th with a 2-over 74 in the first round, 1-under 71 in the second round and an overall 2-over 218. The Landfall Tradition is Nguyen's third consecutive top 25 finish, in addition to being the third consecutive time finishing as the leader for the Tar Heels. Only two strokes behind is sophomore Leslie Cloots with a 4-over 220. Cloots, of Antwerp, Belgium, registered three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey for a 3-over 75 on day three, in addition to a 2-over 74 on day two and a 1-under 71 on day one to finish in 25th place.
Lexi Harkins, a freshman from Crystal Lake, Ill., fired one birdie, four bogeys and a double bogey for a 5-over 77 in the final round of play to land in 53rd. Her overall score, an 8-over 224, is a combination of a first round 1-over 73 and a second round 2-over 74. Senior Maia Schechter finished in a tie for 66th place after rallying with a 1-over 73 in the third round to move up nine spaces on the individual leaderboard. Schechter, of Takoma Park, Md., registered her second eagle of the tournament along with a birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey in the final round, which adds to her 8-over 80 in the second round and 2-over 74 in the first round.
Elizabeth Mallett, a junior from Sutton Coldfield, England, moved into 89th with a 20-over 236 overall score. Mallett shot a 3-over 75 in the first round, an 8-over 80 in the second round and a 9-over 81 in the last round. The Tar Heels registered a single Tar Heel individual, sophomore Rachel Jones. Jones jumped six places to end in a tie for 79th place with a 15-over 231. Jones scored three birdies and five bogeys for a 2-over 74 in the last round, in combination with a 5-over 77 in the second round and an 8-over 80 in the first round.
No. 11 Wake Forest fought to the finish and led the field of 18 teams with an even-par 864. Alabama climbed the rankings for a 4-over 868 to end in second. Notre Dame and South Carolina tied for third with a 7-over 871. Virginia carded an 8-over 872 for fourth, and one stroke behind is Oklahoma State with a 9-over 873. Duke and Purdue tied for seventh with a 12-over 876, and Florida took ninth with a 14-over 878. In a two-way tie for tenth at a 17-over 881 is Arizona and UCF.
Ashley Holder, of UCF, kept hold of first place in the field of 99 competitors with a 7-under 209. South Carolina's Nanna Madsen followed closely with a 6-under 210 for second place. Alabama's Emma Talley finished in third with a 5-under 211. A 3-way tie for fourth with a 3-under 213 comes between Alabama's Lakareber Abe, Allison Emrey and Virginia's Elizabeth Szokol. In lone seventh is Duke's Leona Maguire with a 2-under 214, and in a tie for eighth with a 1-under 215 is NC State's Lindsay McGetrick, Tennessee's A.J. Newell and Notre Dame's Ashley Armstrong. At an even-par 216 are Arizona's Manon Fidali, Florida's Maria Torres and Wake Forest's Erica Herr.
The Landfall Tradition, a 54-hole event on the par 72, 6,244-yard layout Pete Dye Course, has concluded the fall campaign for the women golfers. The Tar Heels will return to action in the spring at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge from Feb. 8-10 at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, which features a par 71, 6,017-yard layout.
