Tar Heels Edged By Stanford, 17-16

STANFORD, Calif. --- North Carolina won five of 10 bouts but Stanford got a major decision at 285 pounds to pull out a 17-16 decision Saturday afternoon in an outdoor dual meet. Joey Ward, Christian Barber, Chris Mears, John Michael Staudenmayer and Alex Utley were individual winners for the Tar Heels, who were looking to avenge last year's 28-12 loss to the Cardinal in Chapel Hill.
Stanford (3-1) pulled out to an early 6-0 lead with wins at 125 and 133 before Ward got Carolina on the board with a 6-1 decision over Isaiah Locsin at 141. Barber then put UNC (0-1) ahead for the first time with a 13-4 major decision over Garrett Schaner at 149. Mears then stretched the lead to 10-6 with a four-point final period that lead to an 8-6 decision over Max Hvolbek at 157.
No. 14 Jim Wilson got the Cardinal back to even thanks to his 11-3 major decision over Ethan Ramos at 165, and the bonus point made it 10-10 after six bouts.
Carolina responded right away, however, with Staudenmayer and Utley posting back-to-back decisions to open up a 16-10 advantage. No. 20 Staudenmayer got takedowns in the first two periods to take control in a 6-1 win over Keaton Subjeck at 174, while Utley rode out Garet Krohn for a 3-1 victory at 184.
Zach Nevills scored a takedown of Frank Abbondanza with just three seconds left in a tie bout to win 3-1 at 197, leaving it all up to Nathan Butler and Josh Lehner at heavyweight. Butler grabbed a 2-0 lead after one period and pushed his lead to 8-1 after two with a late takedown. Lehner was unable to score in the final period to avoid the major decision, and Butler's bonus point gave Stanford the 1-point victory.
Carolina will travel to Fresno, California, Sunday to compete in the Roadrunner Open.
