Tar Heels Maintain Third In Directors' Cup Standings
December 18, 2014 | General
The UNC program has had a banner fall with five sports already scoring in the competition. Two more sports – volleyball and football – will be counted into the rankings on December 24 and January 15, respectively.
The Tar Heels, who were also third in the initial standings on December 4, have 336.5 points to date, trailing only Pac 12 powers Stanford (417) and UCLA (366). There are a total of five ACC schools in the Top 13 of the recent standings.
Carolina has accumulated points in women's cross country (22nd place at NCAA Championships), men's cross country (12th place at NCAA Championships), field hockey (NCAA semifinalist), women's soccer (NCAA Final 16) and men's soccer (NCAA quarterfinalist). When volleyball and football points are added in this will mark the first time in the history of the award (which dates to 1993-94) that Carolina will have scored in all of its fall sports programs.
Following Stanford, UCLA and Carolina in the Top 10 are Virginia (303), Syracuse (279), Georgetown (260), Penn State (238), Washington (233), Michigan State (223) and Colorado (222).
ACC teams to date include UNC at 3rd, Virginia at 4th, Syracuse at 5th, Florida State at 11th, Notre Dame at 13th, Virginia Tech at 26th, Clemson and Louisville at 38th, NC State at 41st, Boston College at 47th, Duke at 60th and Wake Forest at 68th.
