North Carolina quickly countered at 165. John Michael Staudenmayer took NC State's Nijel Jones down in the first period. No points were scored in the third period, and the 3-1 victory for Staudenmayer tied up the team score at 3-3.
NC State earned a major decision victory to go up 7-3 over the Tar Heels, as Scott Marmoll fell 12-3 to Pete Renda.
Alex Utley cut the deficit to one point, 7-6, with a decision over Michael Macchiavello. Utley took a 2-1 lead after the first period before recording an escape in the second period and a takedown in the third, while Macchiavello picked up two escapes in the third period. Utley's point for riding time gave him a 6-3 decision win.
The Wolfpack picked up a decision at 197 by KaRonne Jones and a pin at heavyweight by Nick Gwiazdowski to extend their lead to 16-6.
Kraisser returned the Tar Heels to within single digits and continued his success from the Navy dual. After a scoreless first period, Kraisser earned an escape in the second period. State's Micah Perez selected neutral for the third period. Kraisser quickly took Perez down and earned three points for a five-second near fall. In more quick wrestling, Perez reversed Kraisser, who then escaped. Kraisser then got a takedown and two points for near fall to win the bout 11-2.
At 133, Troy Heilmann fell to Chris Wilkes by a score of 7-2. Wilkes took the lead early with takedowns in each of the first two periods. The victory pushed the Wolfpack to a 19-10 lead.
The Tar Heels closed out the dual with two shutout decisions. Evan Henderson defeated Sam Speno 7-0. Henderson earned two points in each period: a takedown in the first, a reversal after selecting bottom in the second and a takedown in the third. Henderson earned the seventh point from 4:02 of riding time.
Christian Barber also shut out his opponent, NC State's Brian Hamann. In a close match, Barber earned a reversal in the second period to defeat Hamann 2-0.
The final two decisions for the Tar Heels brought the final score to 19-16 in favor of NC State.
