Today in Tar Heel history
Feb. 7, 1991: In a strange scheduling quirk created by the first Gulf War, Carolina played NC State for the second straight day, earning a split with a 92-70 win at the Smith Center. The original UNC-State game in Chapel Hill had been scheduled for Jan. 16, but 40 minutes before tipoff, when it became obvious the start was going to coincide with a nationally televised address from President Bush, the chancellors of both schools agreed to postpone it. Some fans were already in the building and players had already gone through early warm-ups.
The only rescheduling possibility was to play on back-to-back nights. After Les Robinson's State team earned a 97-91 win in Raleigh, Carolina rebounded with a resounding win in the rematch.
