Carolina Prevails In Marathon Match Over Vandy

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 3 North Carolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Women's Team Indoor Championship with a 4-3 win over Vanderbilt on Friday in a match that lasted nearly four hours at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

#5 Hayley Carter clinched the victory with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) victory at No. 2 singles over Vanderbilt's Courtney Colton.

Carolina (5-1) open the match by earning the doubles point as its top two teams won their respective matches. The No. 2 doubles duo of Jamie Loeb and Carter won 6-4 to even the best of three doubles competition at 1-1.

The Tar Heels No. 1 team of Whitney Kay and Carolina Price secured the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-5) victory.

In singles, #2 Loeb continued her torrid play with a 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 1 singles over #61 Lauren Mira, giving Carolina a 2-0 lead over the Commodores.

Vanderbilt tightened the match at 2-1 by winning at No. 6 singles, before Caroline Price came-from-behind to win at No. 4 singles, 1-6, 6-2, 10-7, for a 3-1 advantage.

The 'Dores earned a straight set win at No. 5 singles to make it 3-2, and then tied the match at 3-3 when #48 Georgina Sellyn outlasted #88 Whitney Kay, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9, leaving it up to Carter and Colton to decide who would advance to play on Saturday.

The second-seeded Tar Heels will face seventh-seed Duke on Saturday. The Blue Devils won 4-2 over Michigan on Friday.
