Football
Hakeem Nicks just finished a very difficult season with the Giants. It sounds like he's still up for a challenge, though. Stepping in for a very popular player with the Panthers could be a tough task:
I'm told Hakeem Nicks is the Panthers' top target to replace Steve Smith. Panthers hope to bring him in for a visit soon.

Today in Tar Heel history
March 14, 1992: Carolina dispatched 18th-ranked Florida State, 80-76, in the ACC Tournament semifinals. The brash Seminoles had whipped the Tar Heels twice during the regular season, and were seen as a bit of the whippersnapper of the ACC in their first year in the league. Stop me if this sounds familiar: trailing just 75-73 after a Charlie Ward three-pointer, the 'Noles committed a major mental error by calling a timeout they didn't have. Hubert Davis hit both free throws to essentially put the game out of reach.
Sam Cassell, one of the ringleaders of the FSU run-and-gun style, fouled out with 37 seconds left, delighting the partisan Charlotte Coliseum crowd of over 23,000. Davis finished with 28 points, and George Lynch added 21 points and 14 rebounds.
Long read
It's entirely possible that maybe this is a nerdy, inside-writing type piece that you won't care about. But it also seems like it's an intelligent take on what makes writing and sportswriting work (and not work) today, and how that has changed in recent years. Oh, and it's also about Rick Reilly halting his column at ESPN.com.
