March 28, 1993: Carolina edged Cincinnati, 75-68, in overtime in the East Regional final. Donald Williams was the offensive star, scoring eight of the final 13 for the Tar Heels. Derrick Phelps was the defensive star. After Nick Van Exel exploded for 21 points in the first 15 minutes, Dean Smith told Phelps to stay with Van Exel to the exclusion of all other defensive principles. Van Exel made just one basket over the final 30 minutes and finished with 23 points.
