Tar Heel Rundown: April 2
April 2, 2014 | General
Basketball
Next year's biggest question for the Tar Heels might be whether they will be the ACC favorite...Here's the officials who were selected to work the Final Four...Can we all agree that the NCAA Tournament is pretty much one of the most awesome sporting events of the year? OK, good. That being said, part of what makes it so much fun is the weird mix between incredible games and the strange way it is run. Here's a story that illustrates the hilarity: while the great Michigan State-UConn game was playing out, the host facility was busy confiscating a cat mug. You have to read it for it to make sense...
How about a quick clip of incoming signees Justin Jackson (the passer) and Theo Pinson (the dunker) hooking up at McDonald's All-American Game practice?
Speaking of Pinson, he jumped over former Duke star Jay Williams in the dunk contest, and somewhere Greg Paulus knew exactly how Jay felt:

So, why aren't number-one seeds making the Final Four anymore? This story has some ideas (hint: not parity)...This has more to do with the NBA than college hoops, but it's the offseason. Thought this was a balanced look at how analytics is helpful in basketball, but is not the be-all, end-all that some want it to be...Vince Carter had 12 points and four rebounds for Dallas...Brandan Wright added 14 and 5...Eight points, five assists and six rebounds for Kendall Marshall...This marks the third Rundown of this season that has included a video of Ty Lawson making someone look absolutely silly. This is from Monday night:

Get to know new running backs coach Larry Porter, who was mic'd up at a recent practice:

The women's basketball team was eliminated by homestanding Stanford...The young Tar Heels will spend a good portion of the offseason thinking about the fateful final four minutes (by the way, nice job by the Durham paper to send a writer to Palo Alto)...Good sit-down with Sylvia Hatchell, who has to be very proud of what her team accomplished during a difficult season...This quote from former baseball great Delino DeShields about watching his daughter, Diamond, play for the Tar Heels is exactly how every parent feels about watching their kids...Wasn't exactly sure what category this fit under, so without further consideration, here's Bubba Cunningham dancing:

Dustin Ackley had two hits and scored a couple of runs for Seattle...Brian Roberts had a walk for the Yankees.

Long read
This extensive feature on former DC Assault honcho Curtis Malone does a nice job of showing all sides of the AAU basketball argument. It can be a great influence, a terrible influence, or somewhere in-between.
