Carolina Falls to Top-Seeded Virginia 4-0 in ACC Finals
April 27, 2014 | Men's Tennis
CARY, N.C. - The third-seeded North Carolina men's tennis team fell to top-seeded Virginia 4-0 in the final of the 2014 ACC Championships on Sunday at Cary Tennis Park.
The ninth-ranked Tar Heels drop to 24-5 on the season, while the No. 4 Cavaliers - who claimed their eighth consecutive ACC crown - improve to 23-2.
In doubles, Carolina got off to a quick start with early breaks on courts one and three, but Virginia recovered and made a strong push to seal the doubles point.
The 74th-ranked pair of Alex Domijan and Harrison Richmond struck first for the Cavaliers, defeating Carolina's Nelson Vick and Oystein Steiro 8-5 in a back-and-forth match on court two. Brayden Schnur and Brett Clark, ranked 35th nationally, responded by stifling a late rally by Virginia's 54th-ranked duo of Luca Corinteli and Mac Styslinger to win 8-5 at the No. 1 spot. With the doubles point up in the air, Virginia's Justin Shane and Mitchell Frank were able to pull away from Ronnie Schneider and Jack Murray on court three to give the opening point to the Cavaliers.
In singles, Schneider and junior Oystein Steiro both won first sets on courts two and four, respectively, but did not finish their matches after Virginia rattled off straight-set wins on courts three, five and one in that order to clinch the victory.
"I'm proud of my team," said head coach Sam Paul. "It was a good weekend for us. We came up short today and didn't accomplish what we came to do, but I have to congratulate Virginia. They are obviously very good."
The Tar Heels will now await their NCAA Tournament draw, which will be revealed on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com. First and second round play will take place May 9-11 on 16 campuses.
