BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Former North Carolina wrestling associate head coach Cary Kolat has been named the new head coach at Campbell University, Campbell athletic director Bob Roller announced Monday.
Kolat, a former two-time NCAA champion and member of the 2000 United States Olympic Wrestling Team, recently completed his fourth year as a member of the North Carolina coaching staff.
Kolat was elevated to the position of associate head coach in 2012 and served as the director and head coach of the North Carolina Olympic Training Center based in Chapel Hill.
"We wish Cary the best of luck as he begins his head coaching career," UNC head coach C.D. Mock said. "He has been a big part of Carolina wrestling and helping us develop into a program that can compete at the national level. Campbell is getting an outstanding coach and leader for its program."
Prior to his most recent stint at Carolina, Kolat was on the UNC staff for two years in 2002-03 and has worked on collegiate staffs at Lehigh, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Lock Haven, his alma mater.
Kolat won NCAA championships in 1995 and 1996 at Lock Haven and finished second as a freshman at Penn State in 1993. He finished his collegiate career with a 111-7 record. He went 137-0 in high school, winning four Pennsylvania state titles. In addition to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, Kolat competed for the United States in a dozen other international competitions.
In the summer of 2011, Kolat made a return to the mat in a competitive fashion and was a finalist at the U.S. Open and as a result took part in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Kolat last competed in 2008 before his impressive run at the U.S. Open.
