UNC New Media Honored For Broadcast
June 18, 2014 | General
UNC's New Media Office, part of the University of North Carolina Department of Athletics, was honored recently at the 2014 College Sports Media Awards in Atlanta. UNC won an award for Outstanding Live Game and Event Production in the Collegiate Athletics division, specifically honoring a broadcast that was part of the 2013 NCAA Baseball Regional.
UNC was recognized for a June 3, 2013, NCAA Tournament baseball game between the host Tar Heels and Florida Atlantic. That broadcast, Game 7 of the Chapel Hill Regional, received higher ratings than the programing on ESPN2 during that timeslot.
"Our New Media unit has done an outstanding job covering our sport programs by producing live events on ESPN platforms and GoHeels.com, creating gameday video productions, and telling timely news stories about the amazing accomplishments of our student athletes," said Rick Steinbacher, who oversees that office as UNC's Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Communications. "This national award is a tribute to all of their hard work and creativity."
Carolina was the first collegiate athletic department to produce a live event for ESPN3, a Tar Heel baseball game on Feb. 24, 2012. Since then, UNC has produced more than 100 live broadcasts for ESPN platforms, including games and press conferences. UNC's broadcast of the press conference about Notre Dame joining the ACC aired live on ESPN.
Crews for each live broadcast range from 15-20 people, a mix of full-time athletic department staff, part-time staff and gameday freelancers, and UNC students who gain valuable professional experience from working as part of the team.
The broadcast team for the award-winning baseball game included Taylor Hoggard, Matt Bachman, Josh Reavis, Alex Carlson, Dylan Field, Jon Leggette, Ciarra Watkins, Michael Crowe, Laura Escobar, Jonathan Cunningham, Brian Waer, Kyle Straub, Daniel Kane, Ian Lang, Jones Angell, John Manuel, Jason Andrews, Kyle Lang and Ken Cleary.
