Tar Heels 9th At Powerade Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. - The Carolina women's golf team fired a 4-over-par 292 in the second round of the Powerade Cougar Classic and is tied for 9th place with an 11-over 587 total. Two Tar Heels, Leslie Cloots and Lexi Harkins, both fired a 1-under 71 at Yeamans Hall to lead the way for Carolina.
Cloots posted three birdies and two bogies while Harkins fired four birdies and three bogies. Cloots, a sophomore from Antwerp, Belgium, is tied for 31st place with a 2-over 146 total while Harkins, a freshman from Crystal Lake, Ill., is tied for 42nd at 4-over 148. Senior Maia Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., leads the Tar Heels in the individual standings as she is tied for 19th place at even par 144. She carded a 3-over 75 on Monday with two birdies and five bogeys. Junior Elizabeth Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, also carded a 3-over 75 in the second round with two birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey. Bryana Nguyen, a freshman from Columbia, Md., shot a 6-over 78 for a 157 total and is tied for 102nd place.
Arkansas grabbed the second-round lead over the 23-team field by firing a 4-under-par 284 for a 9-under 567. Wake Forest and UCLA are just two strokes back in a tie for 2nd place at 7-under 569. The Demon Deacons shot a 1-under 287 on Monday while the Bruins fired the low round of the day, a 9-under 279. NC State is in 4th place at 4-under 572 while Duke is 5th at 2-under 574 and UCF is 6th at even par 576. Rounding out the top 10, Virginia is in 7th place a 1-over 577, Mississippi State is 8th at 5-over 581, and Carolina and Tennessee are tied for 9th place at 11-over 587.
Sierra Sims of Wake Forest leads the individual race at 11-under-par 133 after firing a 4-under 68 in the second round. Augusta James of NC State and Bronte Law of UCLA are three strokes back in a tie for 2nd place at 8-under 136. UCLA's Alison Lee and Duke's Sandy Choi are deadlocked in 4th place at 7-under 137. Regina Plasencia is alone in 6th place at 5-under 139 while Duke's Leona Maguire and Virginia's Lauren Diaz-Yi are tied for 7th place at 4-under 140.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Tuesday at Yeamans Hall, which features a par 72, 6,204-yard layout. There will be a shotgun start for the final round beginning at 8:30 and live scoring will be available on GoHeels.com.
