UNC Storms Past Ducks 4-0 In Kick-Off Semis

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center with a 4-0 victory over Oregon. The seventh-ranked Tar Heels improve to 5-0 on the season while Oregon lost its first match of the season and is 3-1.
In the first semifinal match Friday, Virginia Tech spotted Alabama the doubles points before storming back to beat the Crimson Tide 4-1.
Saturday's lineup with feature Alabama vs. Oregon in the consolation match at 3 p.m. and North Carolina vs. Virginia Tech in the championship match at 6:30 p.m. The winner of tomorrow's second match will advance to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championship February 13-16 in Chicago, Ill.
“I thought we played well today against a very solid Oregon team that came at us,” said UNC head coach Sam Paul. “Virginia Tech is a very talented team and that will be a tough match for us tomorrow. We had great crowd support today and hope to see an equally large crowd to cheer us on tomorrow night.”
Carolina bolted to a 1-0 by clinching at courts 1 and 3 in doubles. Brayden Schnur and Brett Clark were dominant on the #1 court, winning 6-1 over Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos. Both of the other matches were 5-4 in Carolina's favor and were finishing their 10 games simultaneously. Ronnie Schneider and Jack Murray persevered to win 6-4 at #3 to clinch the point. Oystein Steiro and Esben Hess-Olesen had fought back from a 2-4 deficit to go up 5-4 before their match was suspended once UNC clinched the team point.
Carolina won all six first sets in singles and then went on to finish the win over the Ducks in 1:43 total between doubles and singles. Oystein Steiro finished first, clinching a 6-1, 6-2 win over Joey Swaysland at #6 singles. Courts two and three finished virtually at the same time. Ronnie Schneider beat Daan Maasland 6-1, 6-3 at #2 and less than a minute later Brett Clark won over Jayson Amos 6-3, 6-2 on the third court.
Carolina is playing host to an ITA Kick-Off Weekend for the first time since 2009. UNC is now 7-6 all-time in ITA Kick-Off Weekend matches.
