
Tar Heels Pick Up Fourth and Fifth Dual Wins In A Row

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Tar Heels defeated Rider and George Mason Sunday at George Mason, with North Carolina wrestlers picking up four major decisions in the process. North Carolina won 20-13 over Rider and 29-6 over George Mason. The Tar Heels gave up just two matches against George Mason.
The Tar Heels went back-and-forth with Rider for the lead of the first dual before Chip Ness's decision assured the victory to North Carolina.
Alex Rinaldi opened up the day for the Tar Heels with a 7-2 decision over Rider's Zach Valcarce at 125. The scoring stayed low until Rinaldi's four-point third period, where he scored two escapes and a takedown. Rinaldi also got a point for riding time.
At 133, Troy Heilmann fell in a close 7-6 decision to Robert Deutsch. Heilmann had a 3-0 lead after two periods, but Deutsch came back to win the bout.
No. 15 Joey Ward continued to have success in a very close 2-1 decision over Rider's Chuck Zeisloft. Ward and Zeisloft each scored a point from an escape, but Ward earned the riding time point for his victory.
Carolina lost the lead of the dual at 149, where B.J. Clagon defeated Christian Barber by major decision. Barber earned four escapes in the match.
The momentum continued for Rider at 157. Chad Walsh earned a 6-3 decision over Chris Mears. Mears scored the first takedown of the match as well as an escape.
At 165, No. 20 Ethan Ramos won by a 14-2 major decision over Jimmy Morris. Ramos racked up three takedowns, two reversals and two points from near fall. He also earned a point for riding time. Ramos's win tied up the dual score at 10.
John Michael Staudenmayer had his first of two major decisions in a 10-2 victory over Rider's Steve Nelson. Staudenmayer scored a takedown in the first period, then recorded five points in the third with an escape and two takedowns. He also received a point from riding time.
At 184, Scott Marmoll continued the Tar Heel success with a 5-0 decision over Ali Yildiz. After a scoreless first period, Marmoll escaped and took down Yildiz in the second. He was also granted a point for Yildiz stalling.
Ness locked up the dual victory for the Tar Heels with a 14-7 decision over Donald McNeil of Rider. Ness was taken down in the first, but tied up the score 3-3 at the end of the period. He recorded three takedowns, a reversal and two escapes in the rest of the match. Ness's victory brought the dual score to 20-10 going into the last match.
The match closed with an overtime victory for Rider's Greg Velasco over Frank Abbondanza. Abbondanza and Velasco each had an escape in regular time, but Velasco had an escape and takedown in the third overtime period for the victory.
North Carolina returned to the mat to face George Mason, and gave up just two matches in the process.
At 125, Cody Karns accepted a forfeit, giving the Tar Heels an early 6-0 lead.
Heilmann, Ward and Joey Moon won matches at 133, 141 and 149, respectively. Heilmann's win was a close 5-2 decision over Vince Rodriguez. It was secured by a last-second takedown, after a scoreless first opening period.
Ward earned his second one-point win of the day with a 3-2 defeat of George Mason's Sahid Kargbo. Ward took down Kargbo in the first period, but Kargbo countered with an escape. Ward earned his third point from an escape from down position in the second.
At 149, Joey Moon wrestled to a 10-5 decision over Blake Roulo. The first period featured three takedowns and two escapes between the wrestlers. Moon secured his victory in the second period with four points coming from two escapes and a takedown. Moon's win brought the dual score to 15-0.
George Mason scored their first team points at 157, with Greg Flounoy's 8-5 decision over Robert Henderson. Henderson had a 3-2 lead through two periods, but Flounoy took down Henderson twice in the final period to earn the decision.
Ramos returned the Tar Heels to their winning ways with an 8-1 decision over Patrick Davis. Ramos took the lead early with two takedowns in the first period. He scored three more points in the second period and earned a point for riding time.
At 174, Staudenmayer picked up with second major decision with a dominant 11-1 win over George Mason's Ryan Forrest. Staudenmayer earned his first five points with a takedown and three points for near fall in the first period. He recorded three more in the second and took down Forrest for the third time in the third period. Staudenmayer's victory brought the score to 22-3, assuring the Tar Heels the dual win as well.
Marmoll wrestled a close 2-0 match against Daniel Mika. The only point scored in the match was an escape by Marmoll in the second period. His other point came from riding time.
Ness earned the fourth major decision of the day for the Tar Heels with his 14-5 victory over George Mason's Matt Meadows. Ness only had a two-point lead after one period, but he earned four takedowns in the rest of the match to give him the solid nine-point win.
North Carolina closed the day with a 7-3 loss to Jake Kettler by Abbondanza. Abbondanza scored three escapes in the bout. The Tar Heels won the dual 29-6.
The Tar Heels will return to action Sunday, Feb. 1, as they host their first two of six February home duals against N.C. State and Drexel in the Eddie Smith Field House.
