Ward, Ramos, Heilmann Place At Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA --- Joey Ward, Ethan Ramos and Troy Heilmann were place finishers to lead the North Carolina wrestling team to a 15th-place finish at the 2015 Defense Soap and Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle Friday at Chattanooga's McKenzie Arena. Ward advanced to the semifinals at 141 pounds and defeated Penn State's Kade Moss in the final consolation round to take fifth place.
Ramos rebounded from a loss in the second round of the championship draw at 165 to take seventh. The redshirt freshman won four straight bouts to reach the top eight and defeated Dakota Friesth of Wyoming 7-3 in the seventh place match.
Heilmann, who used a sudden victory win over UTC's Nick Soto Thursday to advance to the championship quarterfinals at 133, defeated Missouri's Zach Synon 3-2 in the consolation draw to finish in the top eight.
John Michael Staudenmayer just missed the top eight, losing in double overtime to Kyle Crutchmer of Oklahoma State one round shy of placing.
Penn State won the team competition for the fifth consecutive year with 165 points, edging Missouri (150) and Oklahoma State (135.5). Pittsburgh was the highest finisher among ACC teams, taking eighth with 72 points.
Carolina will return to dual action Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Pitt Duals. The Tar Heels will face Pittsburgh in their ACC opener before taking on Lock Haven and Eastern Michigan.
