Tar Heel Doubles Duo Advances To Semifinals
October 11, 2015 | Men's Tennis
Tar Heels continued their standout play Saturday at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., earning a semifinals spot and a ticket into a prestigious event coming up later in the fall.
In the doubles main draw, UNC's Brett Clark and Robert Kelly beat Ohio State's Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard 7-6 (4), 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. They'll face Florida's Maxx Lipman and Elliott Orkin Sunday for a spot in the championship on Monday.
In the singles draw, junior Ronnie Schneider beat Shane Vinsant 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-2 in the morning's Round of 16 but fell in the afternoon quarterfinals to Stanford's Tom Fawcett. Schneider dropped the first set 6-2 but held a 5-4 lead in the second before Fawcett rallied for a 7-5 win.
Schneider doesn't leave empty-handed, though: In reaching the quarterfinals, he earned an automatic qualifier spot for the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. That tournament is Nov. 12-15 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
