Xu Leads Tar Heel Fencers At Garret Penn State Open

Freshman Jason Xu tied for third in men's epee Sunday to provide the highlight of a successful weekend as the UNC men's and women's fencing teams competed at the 43rd annual Garret Penn State Open.
The event was held in the White Building on the Penn State campus and included fencers from Ohio State, University of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Temple, Brown, and Yale, in addition to the host Nittany Lions.
The Tar Heel women competed on Saturday, with solid performances in all weapons. Top finishers were Gabrielle D'Astoli, who placed 13th in women's foil, and Diana Philpot, who place 13th in women's sabre.
The rest of the Carolina foil field was Amanda Lalezarian 25th, Sydney Persing 29th, and Alicia Chen 39th.
In epee, Sara Moreno was 22nd, Erin O'Neill was 23rd, Samantha Galina was 37th and Beni Mathieu was 41st.
After Philpot in women's sabre, Sarah Hanvy was 15th, Meredith Bozentka 20th and Noa Allen 21st.
On Sunday it was the men's turn to compete, and Xu's turn to shine. After Xu in men's epee, Michael Gopman-Slonim was 28th and Cody Barnes 45th.
In men's foil, Ezra Baeli-Wang was 37th, Jake Bernstein 43th, Ian Head 45th and Gabe Foster 47th.
In men's sabre, Connor Ritchey was 14th, Matthew Garrelick 24th, Theophilus Onigbinde 31st, Turner Wibbelsman 33rd and Griffin Morehead 44rd.
