No. 16 Tar Heels Edge Army West Point
December 13, 2015 | Wrestling
BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- Redshirt freshman Cory Daniel's 5-4 win at 285 gave the No. 16 North Carolina wrestling team an 18-14 dual victory over host Army West Point Saturday night at Poly Prep. Tyrone Klump, Evan Henderson, Christian Barber, Ethan Ramos and Alex Utley were also winners for the Tar Heels, who travel to No. 22 Old Dominion Sunday.
Klump got the night started with a 9-3 win at 125 before Army West Point got its first lead thanks to Austin Harry's major decision at 133.
Carolina (5-1) showed its strength in the middle weights to take a lead it would not relinquish, as Henderson, Barber and Ramos all won tight decisions to give UNC a 12-7 advantage after six bouts.
But the Black Knights got their second bonus point win of the night at 174 to pull within a point in the team score, meaning the final three bouts would decide the dual. Utley got the crucial decision at 184 to put Carolina up 15-11, but Rocco Caywood's win at 197 meant the outcome would be decided by the heavyweights.
Daniel, a native of Fulton, Maryland, scored the biggest win of his young career, edging Trevor Smith 5-4 to earn the decisive three points that gave Carolina the 18-14 victory.
UNC will face another tough test Sunday night against the nationally ranked Monarchs. Action at ODU's Ted Constant Center begins at 7 p.m.
