March 28, 2015 | Women's Rowing
Racing on a chilly morning in choppy water, the North Carolina rowing team took on West Virginia and host Georgetown Saturday morning on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. The Tar Heels came away with a first place, two seconds and a third in very challenging conditions and with another race ahead of them on Sunday.
“I think our team handled the conditions pretty well – it was incredibly cold and windy,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said.
The UNC novice eight, racing as a third varsity eight, won its race in 6:50.0, ahead of Georgetown (7:01.4) and West Virginia (7:01.8).
The UNC novice four won its race in 7:34.3, edging Georgetown's lightweight four (7:37.7).
The Tar Heel varsity eight was second in its race. The host Hoyas were first in 7:08.8, followed by UNC in 7:13.6 and West Virginia in 7:47.4.
In the varsity four, West Virginia picked up the win in 7:25.5 with UNC in 7:29.7 and Georgetown in 7:36.9.
The varsity eight was Georgetown first in 6:17.8, WVU second in 6:20.5, UNC third in 6:26.3 and the Georgetown lightweight in fourth in 6:39.9.
The wind increased as the day went on and was up to 15-20 miles per hour with whitecaps for the final race, the novice four. The day's order was varsity four, varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and novice four.
“All boats raced pretty well,” Haney said, “but we all think we can race even better and so we are looking forward to that opportunity tomorrow as we begin a new regatta in Occoquan, Va.”
