Tar Heel Novice Boats Earn Bronze At Knecht Cup
April 12, 2015 | Women's Rowing
The North Carolina rowing team joined more than 70 other schools for a weekend of racing at the Knecht Cup, Saturday and Sunday on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J. The Tar Heels' top finishes came from the novice squad, which won bronze in both the novice eight and novice four finals on Sunday.
“I'm very proud of the novice program in their two bronze medals and feel like they do a great job of attacking each race they go to,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “I'm also proud of the varsity program for rising to the occasion and beating or advancing further against teams that have beaten us previously this season. We felt like we raced well and we're looking forward to building off of this weekend's momentum.”
The Tar Heels' next action is Sunday, April 19, when they travel to Occoquan, Va., to take on Delaware, George Mason and George Washington.
At the Knecht Cup, most boats raced heats on Saturday, when windy weather made conditions challenging. “The weather was very interesting on the first day, with high winds that canceled and delayed many races,” Haney said. “I was really proud of how our team handled the changes and was able to perform.”
The varsity four was third in its heat on Saturday in 8:00.77. Advancing to Sunday's semifinals, UNC finished sixth in that race in 8:05.40 to advance to the third level final. In that race, UNC was fifth in 8:09.39.
The second varsity four, made up of a varsity coxswain and four novice rowers, finished fourth in its Saturday heat in 8:12.77, earning a spot in Sunday's petite final, where UNC was sixth in 8:17.00.
The second varsity eight was fourth in its heat in 7:01.24 on Saturday. On Sunday, the Tar Heels were fourth in their semifinal in 7:06.15 to earn a spot in the petite final, where they again finished fourth, this time in 7:08.67.
The varsity eight was fourth in its Saturday heat in 6:52.59. In the semifinals on Sunday, UNC placed sixth in 7:00.01 to earn a spot in the third level final. The Tar Heels were sixth in the final in 7:11.09.
The novice four and novice eight raced their heats on Sunday morning. The novice four was second in 7:56.36 and the novice eight won its heat in 7:08.76 to earn spots in the afternoon's grand finals.
In the novice four grand final, UNC finished in 8:08.39 to earn the bronze. The novice eight also was third, in 7:10.59, to bring home a second bronze.
