Tar Heels Take On George Washington, George Mason

The Tar Heel novice four led the way as the UNC rowing team faced George Washington and George Mason Sunday on the Occoquan Reservoir in Occoquan, Va. Carolina raced George Washington in the morning and host George Mason in the afternoon, and the varsity four won both of its races, beating varsity crews both times.

Also winning was the UNC varsity eight, which fell to GWU in the morning but came back to edge George Mason in the afternoon.

“I was really proud if the varsity eight today and the changes they made from the GWU race to the GMU race,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “We have been talking about attacking and being on the offensive side of things all year and they put that to practice in the GMU race. It was great to see that breakthrough for them. I think the second varsity eight and the varsity four made good strides in that area today from race one to two as well, but we have more to give.

“The novice four had a great day, winning in both races of the day. The novice eight had a last-minute injury as well as an equipment failure, which was just too much to overcome at the last minute. We were happy to have this specific second novice on the water today because this was the first race of the year for many of them and we thought they deserved to get a shot to race. We were happy that they had this opportunity.”

Next up for the Tar Heels is the Dad Vail Regatta on May 8-9 in Philadelphia.
