April 23, 2015 | Men's Tennis
CARY, N.C. – The fourth-seeded North Carolina men's tennis team impressed at the ACC Men's Tennis Championships on Thursday, rolling 13th-seeded Boston College in opening round action at Cary Tennis Park to set up a quarterfinal contest against archrival Duke on Friday. With the win, the Tar Heels notch their 20th victory of the season and improve to 20-9. The Eagles drop to 8-18 with the loss.
Carolina, ranked No. 16 nationally, took control of the match early by capturing the doubles point for the sixth time in its last seven matches. On court two, the sophomore duo of Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider earned its 20th doubles win in an 8-2 defeat of Phil Nelson and Matt Wagner. The pair is 15-5 in dual-match play. Senior Andrew Gores and sophomore Brayden Schnur proceeded to clinch the doubles point for UNC on court three by besting Kent Mukai and Will Turner 8-5. The match represented a reunion of sorts for Gores, who was teammates with Turner during his high school days at Charlotte Country Day.
Carolina's 39th-ranked pair of junior Brett Clark and freshman Robert Kelly led 7-4 on court one when the point was clinched.
In singles, the Tar Heels rattled off three straight-set wins to close out the match. Kelly led the charge by dismissing Turner 6-2, 6-4 for his 30th singles triumph of the season. Murray, ranked No. 117 nationally, followed up with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Kyle Childree on court four. With Carolina leading 3-0, Clark, Schneider and Schnur found themselves in a race to clinch the match. Ultimately it was 23rd-ranked Schneider, who waited through a medical timeout before serving out a 6-4, 6-0 win over the Eagles' Hank Workman.
Fifth-seeded Duke polished off a 4-0 defeat of Miami soon after UNC's win to set the stage for a marquee quarterfinal clash on Friday at noon. The Tar Heels got the best of the Blue Devils in the regular season, notching a 5-2 win in Chapel Hill on April 9.
