CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NCAA is honoring six University of North Carolina athletic programs for Academic Progress Rates ranking among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports.
UNC teams honored by the NCAA this year include men's tennis, women's fencing, women's golf, gymnastics, women's tennis and volleyball.
Carolina led all public institutions in the ACC and was fourth among all ACC schools with the six recognized teams.
This marks the 10th time in 10 years that women's fencing and women's golf ranked in the top 10 percent nationally. Volleyball is among the top 10 percent for the ninth straight year and gymnastics earned its sixth straight top 10 finish.
“We are very proud of the consistent high performance of our six teams which were recognized in the top 10 percent,” says Michelle Brown, Director of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes. “They each earned a perfect 1000 multi-year rate, successfully demonstrating excellence in their programs.”
The APR is measures a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation. This year's award is based on the 2013-14 academic year.
