May 8, 2015 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men's tennis team, ranked 13th nationally, defeated Colonial Athletic Association champion William & Mary 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament first round at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
With the victory, the Tar Heels advanced to the NCAA second round where it will host 20th-ranked Mississippi State Saturday at 3 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Bulldogs advanced with a 4-3 win over #50 Denver earlier Friday in a match that took 4:10 to play.
The win marked the ninth successive time the Tar Heels have won their first round match in the NCAA Tournament, a streak dating back to 2006. The winner of the Saturday's Carolina vs. Mississippi State match will advance to the NCAA Final 16 next Thursday in Waco, Texas against the winner of this weekend's Champaign-Urbana, Illinois regional.
The Tar Heels played solid doubles, quickly jumping to a 1-0 lead in the match. Esben Hess-Olesen and Brayden Schnur defeated Aaron Chaffee and Will Juggins at #1 by an 8-5 ledger and then 45th-ranked Brett Clark and Robert Kelly downed Addison Appleby and Lars de Boer 8-4 at #2. Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider were on the verge of winning at #3 when play was suspended once UNC clinched the doubles point.
Carolina needed three wins to get off the court and rest up for Saturday's match and they accomplished the feat with the matching ending 2:05 after its start. The Tar Heels won the first set on all six courts en route to earning the clinching points.
Within a 10-minute span, UNC achieved the clinching three points as Jack Murray beat Damon Niquet 6-0, 6-2 at #4 singles, Brett Clark beat Addison Appleby 6-3, 6-1 at #3 singles and Brayden Schnur held off a second set rally to beat Christian Cargill at #1 singles, 6-1, 7-5.
UNC improved to 22-23 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, including a 20-19 mark under coach Sam Paul.
