Tar Heel Transfers Program Welcomes Newcomers
September 1, 2015 | Student-Athlete Development
There are plenty of new faces on Tar Heel teams this fall, with incoming classes for all 28 varsity squads. Not all of those new faces belong to freshmen, however.
Each semester, transfers join the Tar Heel family and with them in mind, UNC Student-Development has created a new program, Tar Heel Transfers. The effort launched on Aug. 25, with eight transfer students participating in the first event. The evening included a barbeque dinner and education about UNC and the Tar Heel state.
New members of the baseball, women's basketball, rowing, women's tennis and track & field teams attended.
“This program came about after a suggestion from some of our assistant coaches who felt like our transfers could benefit from a warmer welcome,” said Cricket Lane, Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development. “It is true that they're in a different situation than our freshmen – as upperclassmen they're surrounded by people who are already very well acquainted with UNC, so we want to be sure they feel comfortable and know how glad we are to have them here. We're thrilled to have created another awesome UNC tradition.”
UNC student-athletes who are members of the SWAG peer education group helped with the event, giving new Tar Heels the student perspective. Transfer students left feeling a bit more at home.
“The event gave me more insight about campus life, academics, and the campus history,” said Rachael James-Baker, a member of the women's tennis team who transferred to UNC from Baylor. “We played games and met some new people – it was a lot of fun.”
