January 22, 2016 | Track & Field
CHAPEL HILL – Emily Godwin set a personal record in the pentathlon with 4,069 points in the event at the Tobacco Road Multis. Godwin finished second overall earning eight points for the women's team.
“Today's meet by Emily was an outstanding job all the way around,” assistant head coach Josh Langley said. “Given the potential for distractions I was very please with how she handled the mental aspect of her meet and took advantage of the opportunity to compete.
“She's obviously very encouraged by the score she put up but also knows that she has an opportunity to put up a much larger number at the ACC championships.”
Godwin started with an 8.98 in the 60-meter hurdles to earn 914 points. Godwin tied her lifetime best in the high jump at 1.80 meters (978 points). She took second in the shot put at 11.76 meters and jumped 5.59 meters in the long jump. She timed in at 2:21.31 in the 800 to cap off her final score at 4,091 points which ranks second in school history. She currently ranks third in the nation in the event this year. Her high jump ranks her ninth in the NCAA this year for that event.
Tory Kemp took third in the competition with a point total of 3,718. She ranked third in school history in the event at 3,945 points.
Brittany Hull took on the pentathlon competition for the first time in her career. Hull, who normally pole vaults exclusively, finished fifth overall at 2,846.
“I also want to give a special thank you to UNC facilities and our outstanding group of officials that were able to come in in this bad weather and help run a fantastic meet,” said Langley. “I truly feel we have some the best officials in the country right here in the state of North Carolina.”
