Daavettila Tops Aney In ITA Regional Singles Final

They drove together to the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. They wore matching Tar Heel blue tops and Navy visors on the court. But between the lines it was all business in trying to win a regional title on their home court.
Aney, the third seed and 31st ranked player in the nation, jumped out a 3-0 lead in the opening set, but a service break put Daavettila within 3-2 of her Tar Heel teammate. However, Aney broke back on two occasions to grab the opening set, 6-2.
Daavettila, the top ranked freshman according to the ITA, took hold of the second set, leading 5-1, before Aney plucked away at her deficit and got it back to 5-5. The match was pushed into a tiebreaker that Daavettila won 7-4 to send the match into a third and final set.
Daavettila raced to a 4-0 edge in the third, Aney got within 4-2, but the rookie was too much in earning the win.
The victory earns Daavettila a spot in next week's ITA National Individual Indoor Championship in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Hayley Carter, the No. 1 ranked player in the country, qualified earlier this fall, and will be in action in both singles and doubles alongside Aney in New York.
Aney also has a chance to earn a place in the field as a wild card that will be announced at a later date by the ITA.
