UNC Advances at ITA National Team Indoors
February 12, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The seventh-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team opened play in the 2016 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship Friday morning with a 4-1 win over No. 14 Texas Tech. The victory advanced UNC on to the quarterfinals and a Saturday matchup with No. 6 Ohio State. The Tar Heels and Buckeyes will meet at 9 a.m.
Playing at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., the Tar Heels found themselves in a hole early as they dropped the doubles point for the second match in a row but just the second time all season. Junior Ronnie Schneider and freshman Blaine Boyden won 6-2 at the No. 3 spot, but Texas Tech took the other two matches to move into a 1-0 lead.
Singles, however, belonged to Carolina. Junior Brayden Schnur opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1, defeating 11th-ranked Felipe Soares. Freshman Anu Kodali also won in straight sets, picking up another point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bjorn Thomson at the No. 6 spot.
Playing at No. 2, Scheider beat Hugo Dojas 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Robert Kelly sealed the team victory with a win at No. 5, beating Connor Curry 6-4, 7-6.
UNC improved to 7-0 with the win, while Texas Tech fell to 10-1 with its first defeat of the spring.
