Paul Earns 400th Career Win, UNC Improves To 14-0
March 1, 2016 | Men's Tennis
In the afternoon, the Tar Heels defeated Campbell 7-0, playing on the outdoor courts at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center for the first time this spring. In the evening, back inside, top-ranked UNC beat N.C. Central 7-0. The Tar Heels didn't drop a set in either match.
“It was good to get our first outdoor match in, good to get outside and play outside,” Paul said. “It's a little different, you've got to be more patient and feel the ball. It's just different.”
Against the Camels, Tar Heels quickly grabbed the doubles point, with 6-0 wins at No. 1 and at No. 3. In singles, senior Stuart DePaulo locked up the first point with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6. Freshman Blaine Boyden won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 to make it 3-0, and sophomore Robert Kelly clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3.
For the evening's match, the Eagles fielded just five players, so only two doubles matches and five singles matches were contested. Senior Chad Hoskins saw his first action of the season, winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. Freshman Arturo Schmidt was in the singles lineup for the second time this spring and won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. “It's unfortunate they only had five players, because we wanted to play a few more guys, too, like at No. 3 doubles,” Paul said. “But we can't control that.”
Paul is in his 23rd season as UNC's head coach and has led this year's squad to a 14-0 record and the first No. 1 ranking in program history. He now has a career record of 401-185. In reflecting on the milestone, he gave plenty of credit to associate head coach Tripp Phillips, who is in his 10th season as a UNC assistant coach. “I've had a lot of help, a lot of great players and great people,” Paul said. “I'm lucky to have Tripp and fortunate to be at the University of North Carolina.”
Next up for the Tar Heels is their final non-conference match of the season, on Friday at home against Vanderbilt. Start time will be announced later this week after it is determined whether the match will be played indoors or outdoors.
