Ward Wins Saturday To Finish Seventh At NCAAs

NEW YORK --- North Carolina junior Joey Ward scored a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Lehigh's Randy Cruz to claim seventh place in the 141-pound weight class on the final day of the 2016 NCAA Championships Saturday morning at Madison Square Garden. Ward finishes his All-America season with a record of 23-6.
After a scoreless opening period, Ward rode Cruz for the first 1:02 of the second period before the 16th-seeded Mountain Hawk escaped to take a 1-0 lead. That ride proved to be critical, however, as neither wrestler scored in the final period of regulation. With the riding time point secured to force sudden victory overtime, Ward landed the winning takedown after a tough scramble to secure his seventh-place finish.
Ward's win gave Carolina a total of 10 team points, which had the Tar Heels in a tie for 32nd overall after the morning session.
