Roy Williams On The Death of Maurice Koury
March 9, 2016 | General
Former UNC Board of Trustee member Maurice Koury, a 1949 Carolina graduate, longtime Rams Club member and the namesake for Koury Natatorium and Koury Residence Hall on the Chapel Hill campus, has passed away. Roy Williams and Jones Angell announced the news on Williams' radio show on Monday night.
“Mr. Koury was a true Carolina Gem. He was immensely dedicated to the entire University, not just Athletics. He loved Coach Smith and loved Carolina Basketball and he made me feel like he loved me. But he supported the University even more to the highest degree. Yes, he offered that support financially, but even more with his heart. We've lost one of the great Tar Heels and I don't say that very often. He was a great man.”
"The passing of Maurice Koury is a very sad day for those who care deeply for the University of North Carolina, because Mr. Koury loved Carolina so much. He did so many wonderful things and most of them went without notice. They went far beyond his financial support. He was a leader on campus, in the Educational Foundation and throughout his community. Our prayers are with his family and friends and we thank them for all Mr. Koury did on behalf of the University."
