Tar Heels Race Well On Shortened Day At Knecht Cup

After a successful but weather-shortened day of racing on Saturday, the North Carolina rowing team continues competition on Sunday at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J. UNC is one of 70 schools competing in the regatta.
Crews raced through chilly temperatures Saturday, but the start of rain in mid-afternoon was enough to delay the rest of the racing until Sunday.
The UNC varsity four won its heat, finishing in a time of 8:03.74 to beat Temple, Stanford, Villanova, Jacksonville and George Mason. The Tar Heels then went on to win their semifinal in 8:24.30, earning a spot in Sunday's grand final.
The Carolina second varsity four finished second in its heat in a time of 8:30.67, behind Army at 8:27.11. Also in the heat were Bucknell, New Hampshire, West Virginia and Buffalo. The Tar Heels went on to take sixth in the semifinals (9:17.05), qualifying for Sunday's petite final.
The rest of the Tar Heel boats raced in heats and all moved on to semifinals, which will take place on Sunday.
The varsity eight was second in its heat, finishing in 7:39.32, behind Tulsa (7:28.30) but ahead of West Virginia, Jacksonville and St. Mary's.
The second varsity eight was third in its heat in 7:40.56, behind Massachusetts (7:24.81) and Tulsa (7:38.40) and ahead of West Virginia, Jacksonville, Canisius and St. Mary's.
In the novice eight, UNC was third in its heat but advanced to the semifinal by turning in one of the next four fastest times. The Tar Heels finished in 7:55.67, behind Stanford and Alabama and ahead of Old Dominion, Bucknell and Maryland.

UNC begins racing at 8:06 a.m. Sunday with the second varsity eight semifinal. Racing will continue throughout the day, with the varsity eight finals scheduled to finish a little before 4 p.m.
