GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina's Brayden Schnur has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Players of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the ACC. The honor is the second of the season for Schnur, a junior from Pickering, Ontario.
Schnur won two singles and two doubles matches last week, all against top-50 opponents. On Friday, as the top-ranked Tar Heels hosted No. 3 Virginia, Schnur teamed with Jack Murray at No. 2 doubles to beat eighth-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Mac Styslinger. At No. 1 singles, he held on for a tie-breaker win over No. 8 Ryan Shane, the defending NCAA singles champion.
Sunday against No. 6 Wake Forest, Schnur and Murray, who are now ranked 17th, teamed up at No. 2 doubles to beat the 48th-ranked pair of Petros Chrysochoes and Jon Ho. In singles, Schnur beat 16th-ranked Skander Mansouri in straight sets.
The Tar Heels beat Virginia 4-3 and fell to Wake by the same score, and are now 21-2 overall, 6-2 in ACC play. They remain the No. 1 team in the ITA rankings, updated on Tuesday.
Schnur is 6-7 this spring with five of his wins over ranked opponents. He is currently 29th in the national rankings, up this week from 46th. He and Murray moved up to 17th from 31st.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a road trip to play at Notre Dame on Friday and at Boston College on Sunday.
