July 1, 2016 | General
Once again this July, GoHeels.com will count down the top 25 wins of the school year. Check back around noon EDT each weekday for the latest update before No. 1 is revealed on July 20.
No. 25: Tar Heels Sweep Hoosiers, Vols & Wildcats - Swimming and Diving, Oct. 30, 2015
The Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams took advantage of an invitation to join Indiana, Tennessee and Kentucky in a quad meet, sweeping the competition in Bloomington last October. Led by individual wins from Ben Colley and Sam Lewis, the Tar Heel men edged the No. 9 Hoosiers by a mere six points, while also downing No. 11 UT and Kentucky. The women were even more dominant, taking nine first place finishes (including a hat trick of wins from Helen Moffitt) to comfortably outpace the competition.
No. 24: Carolina Qualifies For The NCAA Championships - Women's Golf, May 7, 2016
After an opening-round 302 left them in 15th place overall, the Carolina women's golf team put together its best performances of the season in back-to-back rounds to advance to the NCAA Golf Championships. Led by senior Elizabeth Mallett's ninth-place finish, the Tar Heels surged to fourth at the NCAA Eugene Regional to lock up one of six qualifying spots for nationals. The Tar Heels would carry the momentum with them to Oregon, finishing 14th despite entering seeded 23rd.
No. 23: Carolina 77, Syracuse 73 - Women's Basketball, Jan. 7, 2016
A disappointing season that was derailed by an injury to senior Xylina McDaniel had its high point on Jan. 7, when the Tar Heels knocked off eventual NCAA finalist Syracuse 77-73 at Carmichael Arena. Led by a transcendant performance from freshman Stephanie Watts, Carolina took its first lead of the game with less than five minutes remaining and held on for a thrilling victory. Watts, who finished two assists shy of the program's first triple-double, put the Tar Heels in front to stay with a lefty runner late in the fourth quarter.
No. 22: Carolina 2, No. 10 Georgia 1 (8 innings) - Softball, April 6, 2016
Carolina dealt Georgia a home loss for the second straight year when the Tar Heels came out of Athens with a 2-1 win in eight innings on April 6. Kristen Brown's solo homer in the top of the eighth would prove to be the difference, with Kendra Lynch going the distance in the circle for UNC. The victory avenged a season-ending 2015 loss to Georgia, which would go on to upset No. 1 Florida en route to the 2016 College World Series.
No. 21: Selmon, Ward Earn All-America Honors - Wrestling, March 18, 2016; Track and Field, June 10, 2016
A pair of standout individual performances saw wrestling's Joey Ward and track's Kenny Selmon earn All-America status at their respective NCAA championships. Ward knocked off No. 8-seeded Kevin Jack of NC State at Madison Square Garden in the round of 12 to become an All-American for the first time, giving UNC a top-eight finisher for the fourth consecutive year. Selmon narrowly avoided disaster when he stumbled over the eighth hurdle in the 400-meter hurdles final in Eugene, but the sophomore stayed up and took third in 49.56 to cap an outstanding season.
