#TarHeel25: No. 15-No. 11
July 6, 2016 | General
Once again this July, GoHeels.com will count down the top 25 wins of the school year. Check back around noon EDT each weekday for the latest update before No. 1 is revealed on July 20.
No. 15: Carolina 6, Longwood 4 (NCAA Harrisonburg Regional) - Softball, May 20, 2016
The UNC softball team opened NCAA tournament play against a Longwood team in the midst of its best season in school history, and the Lancers raced out to a 4-0 lead after three innings in Harrisonburg. But a Kendra Lynch RBI single capped a four-run fifth for Donna J. Papa's Tar Heels, setting the stage for a record-breaking game-winner. Senior Kristen Brown walked off Longwood with her all-time ACC-best 66th career home run, a fitting exclamation point for perhaps the greatest player in UNC softball history.
No. 14: Carolina 12, Penn State 11 (NCAA Semifinals) - Women's Lacrosse, May 27, 2016
A Carolina-Maryland women's lacrosse final seemed like a foregone conclusion heading into Championship Weekend in Philadelphia, but an upstart Penn State squad stood in the way of Jenny Levy's Tar Heels. UNC lead 7-6 at halftime and seemingly put the game away with a 5-1 run to open the second half. The Nittany Lions, in the national semifinals for the first time in 17 years, scored four straight to get within one, but Caylee Waters stoned Steph Lazo with under a minute left to seal the win for Carolina.
No. 13: Carolina 83, Syracuse 66 (NCAA Semifinals) - Men's Basketball, April 2, 2016
Carolina faced a familiar but unexpected opponent in its first Final Four since 2009 when the Tar Heels took on 10th-seeded Syracuse in the national semifinals. Playing the Orange for the third time, UNC broke open a tight game with a 21-10 run to close the first half and cruised to an 83-66 win. Four Tar Heels finished in double figures, including Justin Jackson and Brice Johnson, who had game highs of 16 points each.
No. 12: Carolina 13, Notre Dame 9 (NCAA Quarterfinals) - Men's Lacrosse, May 22, 2016
After a cagey one-goal win at Marquette to open the tournament, Carolina took its play to another level for the rest of the NCAA Championship. That started with an emotional but thrilling rout of Notre Dame in Columbus, Ohio, to put the Tar Heels back in Championship Weekend for the first time in a quarter century. Four goals from Steve Pontrello and a Chris Cloutier hat trick fueled Carolina, which dedicated the game to head coach Joe Breschi's late son Michael, who was killed in Columbus in 2004.
No. 11: Carolina 2, Duke 0 (NCAA Semifinals) - Field Hockey, Nov. 20, 2015
Carolina and Duke had to go all the way to chilly Ann Arbor to renew their rivalry on the sport's grandest stage. But despite the frigid temperatures, the result was the same as the October meeting in Chapel Hill. Malin Evert turned home a penalty corner just 2:14 in before making it 2-0 after halftime as the Tar Heels booked a spot in the NCAA final with a shutout victory over the Blue Devils.
