September 19, 2016 | Women's Golf
Suzy McGuire Whaley will be inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame on October 17. Whaley competed on the women's golf team at Carolina from 1985-1989.
Suzy Mcguire Whaley is one of Carolina's most notable alumnae. Whaley was a significant member of the women's golf team when she competed at Carolina, but she's gone on to influence women's golf after her collegiate career. She went on to compete in the LPGA Tour in 1990 and 1993, but she's more famously known for her qualification and participation in the 2003 Greater Hartford Open when she became the first woman since Babe Zaharias in 1945 to qualify for an event on the PGA Tour.
Whaley went on to be a highly decorated instructor earning Connecticut's PGA Teacher of the Year in 2004 and 2007. She was also honored by Golf Digest with a Top-5 Female Teacher honor from 2010-13. In that same time span she also earned U.S. Kids Top-50 Teachers. From 2008-13 she earned distinctions like LPGA Top-50 Instructor and PGA Top Instructor Honors in Connecticut by Golf Digest.
In 2014 Suzy Mguire Whaley was elected PGA Secretary at the PGA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis on November 22. That made her the first woman to ever be elected as an Officer of the Association. She previously had served as a member of the PGA Board of Directors from 2011-2013.
