Carolina Opens Season With Two Shutouts

CHAPEL HILL – The No. 2 ranked North Carolina women's tennis team opened the dual match season with a pair of 7-0 victories over Ball State and UNCG on Saturday from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
In the morning, Carolina made quick work of Ball State. Hayley Carter and Alexa Graham posted a 6-1 victory to get the ball rolling on court one. Moments later, Sara Daavettila and Rachael James-Baker secured the opening point with a 6-2 win on court three.
#5 Carter was first to post a victory in singles – 6-0, 6-0 – over Carmen Blanco on court one. Cassandra Vazquez quickly made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rosalinda Calderon on court six.
#3 Sara Daavettila clinched a Tar Heel victory, their 42nd in a row at home, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court two over Peyton Gollhofer.
Carolina opened its afternoon play against UNCG by swiftly claiming the doubles point. Hayley Carter and Maggie Kane won 6-0 on court one. On court two, freshman duo Sara Daavettila and Makenna Jones clinched the point for the Tar Heels with a 6-1 victory.
In singles, UNC freshman Alexa Graham claimed the second point of the match and her second singles victory of the day, winning 6-0, 6-0 on court three. Daavettila also earned another singles win 6-1, 6-0 on court two. Cassandra Vazquez sealed the win for the Tar Heels with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Blaine Boaz.
UNC hosts the 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend this coming Saturday and Sunday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Texas and Columbia will begin the weekend with a matchup at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the Tar Heels and Oregon at 12:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the consolation match between Saturday's two losers will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the championship at 1 p.m. The winner advances to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 10-13 in New Haven, Connecticut.
