Carolina Teeing It Up At Wolfpack Intercollegiate
Carolina returns to competition Monday and Tuesday, October 2-3, at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate hosted by NC State at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Seniors Ben Griffin, William Register and Jose Montaño, junior Joshua Martin and sophomore Austin Hitt will tee off for the Tar Heels, who are paired with NC State and Maryland for the first two rounds on Monday.
Junior Preyer Fountain and freshman Ryan Gerard, both Raleigh natives, will play as individuals.
"Olympia Fields allowed our guys to learn a lot about themselves and their games," says Tar Heel head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "We've had a couple productive weeks of practice and qualifying at home and we are all looking forward to our second tournament of the year."
The field includes Carolina, NC State, Campbell, Chattanooga, East Carolina, Francis Marion, George Washington, High Point, James Madison, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, UNCG, USC Upstate and Wofford.
The Wolfpack Intercollegiate is Carolina's second tournament of the fall. The Tar Heels tied for ninth at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational near Chicago. UNC shot 290-292-285 and beat a pair of ranked teams, Southern California and Stanford.
Register and Fountain shot the low rounds of the event for Carolina. Register had a 69 in round two and Fountain matched that score over the final 18 holes.
Register finished tied for 23rd at 5 over 215. Griffin (+6) and Fountain (+8) also finished in the top 30.
"Lonnie Poole is a golf course that we are familiar with and it's also a golf course that will be hosting one of the six NCAA Regional sites later this year," says DiBitetto. "Right now the weather forecast looks great, which should help create a fun tournament and plenty of birdie opportunities. We welcome all Tar Heels to come support our young men as they compete in Raleigh early this week."
