Hitt's Second Round 69 Sends UNC to the Lead

Heels with 4-Stroke Lead at Grandover
Sophomore Austin Hitt shot a 69 and seniors Ben Griffin and Jose Montaño each posted 71s in the second round to lead the University of North Carolina to a four-stroke lead over Duke after 36 holes of play on Saturday at the UNCG Grandover Collegiate. The tournament, which concludes with 18 holes on Sunday, is being contested at the Grandover Resort's East Course.
Carolina is 6-over-par after 36 holes. The Tar Heels shot 9-over and trailed the Blue Devils by nine shots after the first round, but rebounded in the afternoon to post a 3-under-285. Duke shot 298 in the second round to account for the 13-stroke swing between the two teams.
Northwestern is five shots behind UNC at +11. Georgia State (+23) and NC State (+24) round out the top five.
Montaño is tied for second place in individual scoring after shooting 70-71 to post a 3-under-141. Griffin is in fourth place a shot back at 2-under-142.
Montaño and Duke's Alex Smalley are two shots behind Northwestern's Dylan Wu.
Hitt opened with an 81 in the first round, but rallied for a 69 in the afternoon. He was 3-under on the front side, gave two strokes back with bogeys on 12 and 15, before closing with a pair of birdies on 17 and 18. The UNC sophomore is tied for 16th overall at 6 over.
Preyer Fountain and William Register are tied for 39th at 10 over.
Final round action begins Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
