Tar Heels wrap up action at Purdue Invitational
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. - University of North Carolina divers finished up action Saturday in the Purdue Invitational at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatics Center with senior Elissa Dawson and sophomore Bryan Allen taking top four finishes.
Saturday was the day for competition in 10-meter platform diving where the Tar Heels had two men and three women in action.
"The divers had an over all good showing this weekend. Most all of them made finals, which was the goal," said UNC diving coach Abel Sanchez. "However we went into finals pretty flat. We have many things to work on and improve upon. We have intelligent and tough kids and I know they will be where they need to be by February and March.
"It's still early in the year, and it was good to come to this meet and find out where we need to get to by the end of the year."
Senior Elissa Dawson of Durham, N.C. captured second place on the platform which was a finals only event with no preliminary round. She scored 270.75 points. Junior Maria Lohman finished ninth with 228.90 points and junior Qian Yi Pang notched 13th place with 201.25 points.
On the men's side, Tar Heel sophomore Bryan Allen took fourth place with 333.40 points. Sophomore Devin Bellamy scored 236.05 points and placed 11th.
"Today was our best day in terms of placement," said Sanchez. "QianYi and Maria had a solid performance. Elissa was consistent and dove brilliantly ending up 2nd on platform. Devin had a solid list and I couldn't be happier on how he did today and all weekend. Bryan was a little off today and in spite of that, he was able to string some good dives together and end up 4th on platform."
Tar Heel swimmers and divers will be off for two weeks before they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the University of Tennessee Invitational from Thursday, November 30 through Saturday, December 2.
