Tar Heels Fall 4-3 To Georgia Tech
April 1, 2017 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - In a tight conference matchup, the No. 4 North Carolina women's tennis team fell to No. 10 Georiga Tech, 4-3, Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The loss ends a 50-match home win streak for the Tar Heels (20-2, 7-1 ACC) and marks the first time that Carolina has dropped an ACC regular season match since a 4-3 loss to Clemson in April of 2014.
It was an uphill battle for the Tar Heels after dropping the doubles point for the second-straight match. Top ranked Hayley Carter and Jessie Aney cleaned up on court one with a 6-2 win over No. 19 Rasheeda McAdoo and Johnnise Renaud.
Georgia Tech (18-2, 8-0 ACC) responded well with a similar 6-2 win on court two, setting up a duel on court three to decide who would take the early advantage. Carolina's Sara Daavettila and Rachael James-Baker fell behind but stormed back to take a 4-3 lead, before Nami Otsuka and Luca Fabian regained their footing and gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
The hole got a little deeper for UNC when Otsuka took down Chloe Ouellet-Pizer on court five, 6-1, 6-2, to give Georgia Tech a 2-0 edge.
No. 9 Sara Daavettila began the Tar Heel comeback with a 6-2, 6-2 win over #104 Johnnise Renaud on court two.
No. 2 Carter, playing with basically one leg after suffering an injury in the first set, outlasted No. 46 Rasheeda McAdoo on court one, 6-2, 6-4, to knot the score at 2-2.
Georgia Tech quickly regained the lead, 3-2 with a win on court four by Kenya Jones.
On court three, No. 23 Aney evened the score at three apiece. Aney battled to win the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), over No. 113 Paige Hourigan. A late break of Hourigan's serve put Aney in good position to serve out the second set, winning it 6-3.
The match came down to Cassandra Vazquez and Luca Fabian on court six. Vazquez dropped her first set 6-2 but bounced back to take her second set by the same score. Gizdova outlasted her, however, winning the third set 6-2 and clinching the match for the Yellow Jackets.
North Carolina played without No. 40 Alexa Graham, who sat out with an illness.
Carolina steps out of conference to host No. 9 Michigan on Thursday at 1 p.m.
