UNC Rallies To Win ACC Quarters
April 28, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Carolina (28-2) will face fourth seed (#32) Miami on Saturday in a semifinal match scheduled for 2 p.m. on ACC Network Extra and the WatchESPN app. The Hurricanes advanced with a 4-0 victory over 12th seed Boston College earlier in the day.
The No. 1 ranked doubles team of Hayley Carter and Jessie Aney improved to 21-1 on the season with a 6-0 blanking over Julia Mikulski and Andrea Garcia on court one, however, Florida State (15-11) was up to the task and took the opening point of the match with back-to-back wins on courts two and three to garner the 1-0 advantage over the Tar Heels, who surrendered the doubles point for only the fifth time in 2017.
The script flipped once the match moved to singles play. No. 2 Carter, who was named ACC Player of the Year on Wednesday, continued her historic run with a straight-set victory over Gabriella Castaneda to knot the score at 1-1. The win increased Carter's ACC record total to 164 and is now 34-3 in her senior campaign.
No. 66 Alexa Graham gave Carolina its first lead with a straight set victory over Daniela Schippers on court four. Nandini Das on court two. No. 15 Sara Daavettila, the ACC Freshman of the Year, did the same on court two, and No. 32 Aney closed the bout with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, win over #113 Mikulski on court four.
Carolina, the defending champions, reaches the semifinals for the ninth year in a row. Saturday's tilt with Miami (11-11) is a rematch of last year's final that went in favor of the Tar Heels, 4-2, in Cary, N.C.
UNC earned a 6-1 win over the Hurricanes back on March 17 in Coral Gables, Florida.
