Tar Heels Fall In Close Match At Virginia

The Tar Heels opened strong with doubles wins on Courts 1 and 2 to earn the opening point. On Court 2, senior Jack Murray and freshman Simon Soendergaard set the tone with a 6-4 win. UNC freshman William Blumberg delivered an ace on match point to earn a 6-4 win on Court 1, where ninth-ranked Blumberg and Robert Kelly bested the 54th-ranked team of Luca Corinteli and Henrik Wiersholm.
In singles, Tar Heel senior Ronnie Schneider, ranked No. 23, pulled off the upset of the day in beating No. 12 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. That put Carolina up 2-0.
The Cavaliers won the next three matches, picking up wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 to go up 3-2 with two courts still in action. On Court 2, Blumberg had fallen 6-3 in the first set, but he rallied to win the second 6-3 and then claim the third 6-4 on a match point service winner.
That tied the match at 3-3, with Court 5 the only one still in play. UNC senior Jack Murray won the first set 6-2, but Virginia's Henrik Wiersholm, ranked 79th nationally, took the second, 6-3. The two battled through a third set that would decide the team result, and Wiersholm came out on top, 6-4.
It was the second meeting of the season between Carolina and Virginia, and this one was much closer than the first. The teams also met on Feb. 19 in the semifinals of ITA National Team Indoor Championship, when host UVA won 4-0.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a pair of homecourt matches at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC hosts Boston College on Friday (April 14) for an 11 a.m. match then hosts Notre Dame on Sunday (April 16) for Senior Day. That match is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
