USA Fencing Honors Miller With Service Award
July 12, 2017 | Fencing
The Tar Heel coach is headed into his 51st season at UNC.
UNC fencing coach Ron Miller was announced recently as the recipient of the 2017 Jack Baker Award for Service to USA Fencing. Miller was presented with the award at the USA Fencing Hall of Fame and Awards Celebration on July 4 in Salt Lake City.
Â
Also recognized at the ceremony was UNC graduate and Carolina fencing alum Lisa Campi-Sapery, who received the USA Fencing Referees Commission Distinguished Service Award.
Â
"It's a great honor," Miller said of his award. "It's always nice to be honored by your peers and it's especially nice with the company of Lisa and those who were inducted into the Hall of Fame. They're all my friends, people I've worked with as peers or athletes I've worked with. In some cases I hadn't seen them in 10 or 15 years so it was great to catch up."
Â
Throughout his 50-year tenure as UNC's coach, Miller has been an active presence in national and international fencing. The awards ceremony took place during 2017 USA Fencing National Championships and July Challenge in Salt Lake City, where Miller was busily coaching and recruiting in preparation for his 51st season in Chapel Hill.
