September 16, 2017 | Cross Country
BOONE, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's cross country teams each claimed top finishes at the Mountains to Sea Open Saturday in impression fashion. The men won by 49 points, and the women won by 33 points.
The Tar Heel women were led by junior Morgan Ilse, who won the 5k meet with a time of 17:13.61 in her first time racing this season. Redshirt freshmen Mitch Resor, Jeremy Brown and Mark Myers went 2-3-4 in the 8k race, helping the men to an easy victory in their last local meet before facing national competition at the Louisville Classic in two weeks.
Resor finished in 25:33.61, Brown finished just a second behind in 25:34.64 and Myers finished in 25:36.12. Veteran Logan Carroll took eighth in 25:43.48, and Matt Thornton completed the dominate win as he finished ninth in 25:44.40.
On the women's side, sophomore Mady Clahane took second in 17:42.94 for the one-two Tar Heel finish. Junior Casey Greenwalt claimed 6th in 17:59.01, and freshman Lindsey Lanier followed just behind for ninth in 18:09.84. Erin Edmundson came across the line in 11th to complete the scoring, finishing in 18:11.58.
After slow starts at the Elon Opener, both teams went out strong to gain top position early. The strategy was emphasized throughout the last two weeks of practice, and the Tar Heels will look to build on the races they controlled from start to finish.
Next Up: Carolina will head to the Louisville Classic on Sept. 16, for the first of what could be three trips to Louisville, Ky. The city also hosts the ACC Championships and NCAA Championships later this season.
