Sanford Wins Oracle ITA Masters Championship

MALIBU, California - North Carolina freshman Alle Sanford is the champion of the Oracle ITA Masters after defeating defending champion, top ranked and number No. 1 seed Ena Shibahara of UCLA on Sunday from the Malibu Racquet Club.
Sanford, the sixth seed from Westerville, Ohio, shook off five match points to upend Shibahara by a score of 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (11).
The match was a battle from the beginning, but while Sanford showed in the first set she had what it took to challenge the reigning champion, Shibahara capitalized on three aces while going 3-for-3 on break points to take the set 7-5.
Sanford came alive in the second set as she was able to win 3-of-4 break points. The real difference maker was Shibahara's five double faults, which gave Sanford the edge in making a swift comeback to win the set, 6-3, and tie the match.
It was the final set that tested the endurance of not just Sanford and Shibahara, but the crowd as well. The pair traded games for over an hour until finally playing into the deciding tiebreaker. Shibahara came close to winning her second-straight Oracle ITA Masters, but failed to capitalize on five match points.
"It's definitely something I've had to learn over the years," said Sanford of playing in the big moment. "I just try to stay relaxed out there."
"[Alle's] a freshman, but you could tell that she really poured her whole heart and soul out there and wanted it badly," said UNC Head Women's Tennis Coach, Brian Kalbas. "She is wonderful to coach because she just wants to get better and works really hard at it."

GREENVILLE, South Carolina - North Carolina sophomore Makenna Jones defeated No. 39 Petra Granic of Texas to win the Flight 1 Singles championship on Sunday at the Furman Fall Classic.
Ranked No. 65 in the nation, Jones improved to a perfect 6-0 this fall with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 over Granic in Sunday's title match.
Senior Maggie Kane also picked up a win on Sunday over Clemson's Ally Miller Krasilnikov.
