Carolina Improves To 3-0 With Third Shutout Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina earned its third shutout victory of the season Monday, beating Campbell 7-0 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC improved to 3-0 on the year, while the visiting Camels fell to 1-2.
"I thought we had much better focus today," UNC coach Sam Paul said. "I'm happy with today's performance."
UNC now looks ahead to ITA Kickoff Weekend, in which the Tar Heels will host Drake, Michigan and South Carolina. Men's action begins Saturday at 9 a.m., when the Wolverines and Gamecocks meet. The Tar Heels then take on Drake at 12:30 p.m. On Sunday, the losing teams meet in the consolation at 9:30 a.m. The winning teams meet at 1 p.m. for a spot in the ITA National Team Indoors Feb. 16-19 in Seattle, Wash.
"We're looking forward to the weekend," Paul said. "We've got some really good teams coming in and we hope we can get a lot of fans here."
Against Campbell, UNC locked up the doubles point with three wins. Sophomore Josh Peck and freshman Benjamin Sigouin won 6-2 at No. 2 to open. Next to wrap up a win, also 6-2, were sophomore Simon Soendergaard and freshman Mac Kiger at No. 3. Sophomore William Blumberg and senior Robert Kelly, ranked third in the nation, won 6-4 at the top spot.
In singles, the Tar Heels won all six matches in straight sets. Blumberg, ranked No. 2 nationally in singles, was the first to finish, wrapping up a 6-0, 6-0 win with a return down the line. Kiger won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot just moments later. Kelly, played at No. 3, clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
