Carolina Tops Army West Point To Close UNC Duals

CHAPEL HILL --- No. 19 North Carolina dropped a pair of duals to Wyoming and American before closing the day with a 28-12 victory over Army West Point Friday at the UNC Duals at Carmichael Arena. Chip Ness and Cory Daniel were triple winners for the Tar Heels, who host No. 11 Arizona State Saturday at 4 p.m.

Carolina (6-6) led most of the dual against Wyoming, but the Cowboys got wins from ranked wrestlers No. 12 Montorie Bridges and No. 2 Bryce Meredith in the final two bouts to steal the win. The teams split the 10 matches, but Wyoming got a tech fall and a pin to counter major decisions from Ness and Danny Chaid at 184 and 197.

It was the last two bouts that cost UNC against American as well, as the Eagles took six of 10 matches to score the 18-13 upset. Ness scored bonus points again, blanking Prince Hyeamang 16-0 in 4:17 for a second-period tech fall.

No. 4 Troy Heilmann set the tone for the hosts in the nightcap, pinning Taylor Brown of Army West Point in the second period. Wins by Kennedy Monday and Josh McClure pushed the lead to 15-0, and Chaid's major at 197 put the dual out of reach.

UNC faces a short turnaround as the Tar Heels return to Carmichael Saturday at 4 p.m. to host No. 11 Arizona State.
