Jones Reaches Semifinals At ITA All-Americans
October 6, 2018 | Women's Tennis
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Top-seeded Makenna Jones defeated two opponents on Friday to reach the semifinals of the singles main draw at the 2018 Riviera ITA Women's All-American Championships.
Jones, the No. 2 ranked player in the country, began her day against No. 38 Eden Richardson of LSU. The Tar Heel junior was in for a battle from the beginning as she outlasted Richardson in the first set, 7-6 (7) and then held on to secure the victory with a 7-5 decision in the second set.
Next up for the Greenville, South Carolina, native was another Southeastern Conference foe in seventh seed/No. 8 Katarina Jokic of Georgia. Jokic came into Friday's evening match having not lost a set in her previous two matches, but Jones proved to be too much in winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the semifinals.
Jones faces Duke freshman Maria Mateas, who ousted Carolina's Alexa Graham in a round of 16 match on Friday, in a seminal match on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Mateas is the top ranked newcomer this season according to the Oracle/ITA rankings released this fall.
The second semifinal features defending champion Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt versus upstart senior Sophie Whittle of Gonzaga, who advanced out of qualifying earlier in the week.
In doubles, Alle Sanford and Sara Daavettila took down No. 18 Riley and Staines of Tennessee, 8-5, in the main draw doubles backdraw.
